Phoebe and Hannah Adam House
4 Bishop Street
Jamaica Plain, Mass.
Year Built: 1869
Charles Brigham designed this house for Phoee and Hannah Adam, whom he met through Edward D. Boit, Jr. Sturgis & Brigham designed a cottage for Boit in Newport and renovated his townhouse in Boston at 271 Clarendon Street. It appears that Boit and others financed this house for the Adams. Brigham made preliminary sketches for this house by late April, 1869, sent the specifications to the carpenters by late June, 1869 and the house was finished by April, 1870.
Apparently the Adams had difficulties managing their money, as Brigham indicated that, “Misses’ Adam’s house made me an immense deal of trouble and anxiety and I thought it best for my clients to take finds and their disbursement into my own hands and by careful management I succeeded in not losing their money, but of course my time is not paid for. And at 5 percent, there is little profit in such work.”
